The declining enrollment has put pressure on all staff to adapt to teaching subjects beyond their area of specialization. Also, the consolidation of educational curriculum and the changing work requirements for graduates means not everything taught is the best for students, but are sometimes legacy subjects that 'just have to be taught'.

The best part of the job is the interactions with students. However, with so nearly 7 years with the orgnisation, it is a good time to conduct a review and seek new opportunities.

Temasek Polytechnic ensures job security as it is part of the government body and also has great benefits. The people I have worked with were very helpful and friendly to assist on procedures. There were many events going on that encourages team bonding and allows the management to interact with their staff.

Colleagues were friendly and very welcoming. Job roles could be mundane and repetitive depending on the job assigned too. A typical office environment. May not be suitable for those seeking a fun work environment

The institution has taught me a lot of useful skills that would equip and prepare me well to enter the workforce. The good balance between theory lessons and practical sessions allow me to apply the knowledge gained into action.

Every day is different though we are very busy; staff know their roles and are committed to their responsibilities at work. At times, the laughter and staff birthday celebrations help to reduce the stressful work environment. The role of a technical support officer in my various departments provided unique opportunities to facilitate face-to-face workshops to equip lecturers with technical skills for eLearning design as well as the documenting students’ non-academic achievements using corporate videos. Overall, it provided a well-rounded work experience to understand adult training challenges as well as witnessing positive encounters with students e.g. how they overcame odds and won competitive sports events. One enjoyable aspect of work is the annual dinner and dance dinner where poly staff dressed up according to different themes and the combined “performances” put together to cheer each other on in the pursuit of educational excellence.
Pros
A large organisation with lots of opportunities to work with different staff.
Cons

Lots of unnecessary and unhealthy politicking in the offices, and between people who are resistant to changes and unable to accept being corrected. Managers are oblivious of ground issues and processes are rigid in administrative departments. Schools and centers may have a different environment.
Pros
leave benefits, remuneration
Cons
culture, leadership

It is a place that one should be able to achieve work-life balance. Leadership is bad. It is afterall a pseudo government agency. Don't expect much.

TP is a tough place to work in as there is more work than just lecturing. There is committee work and lots of additional meetings from which no consensus is reached. The Internship programme is very badly organised and there is hardly any due diligence carried out on the companies. The student interns have a very tough situation. Staff welfare is non-existent and basically you are on your own.

The best part about working there is there are a lot of dedicated and hardworking lecturers who give their all to their students.

This is a fair, honest and accurate account of the work life at TP.
Pros
great colleagues
Cons
long thankless hours of work

For In house intern, you would not get paid. But the enjoyable part would be working with friends as a group to come up with ideas and able to achieve the results we aimed. Able to do hands-on rather than just studying and understanding from the books.
Pros
Do not need to travel to industry workplace at jurong
Cons
Long Hours

The polytechnic is always open for innovative ideas and the willingness to change but not all changes are for the better. The most enjoyable work was working with the students and seeing them overcoming and resolving problems on their own. While the diploma is a very good diploma, it had not had the chance to nurture from its inception due to numerous changes to management on an average of 2 years which do not allow the diploma to settle in. While teaching has its scheduled classes, it is seldom a typical day as there will always be different issues to deal with the students, assignments, etc that are ad-hoc problems which are challenging at times.
Pros
The school breaks between the semesters allow us to plan our holidays or programs in advance
Cons
There are back to back lessons for certain months which do not allow us regular lunch time.
