Full job description

Join a dynamic team in the Department of Pathology, where you will play a vital role in histological testing for disease treatment and diagnosis. This position offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to laboratory operations and patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive and process laboratory specimens, assigning charge codes and rejecting unacceptable samples.
  • Assist pathologists in trimming and evaluating specimens.
  • Execute various technical functions, including processing, embedding, microtomy, and performing routine and complex staining.
  • Prepare and label slides and ensure block checks are performed accurately.
  • Conduct gross examination of simple and uncomplicated specimens.
  • Perform frozen cryo-sectioning as needed.
  • Manage after-hours duties to support liver transplant and renal explant services.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and execute basic troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Monitor staining and sectioning quality to meet established standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to laboratory personnel on procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain necessary reagents and stains per specifications.
  • Follow instructions from senior staff regarding work procedures.
  • Assist in conducting in-house continuing education classes.
  • Adhere to good laboratory practices, protocols, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Comply with Laboratory Safety Manuals and participate in necessary training.
  • Contribute to project teams as required.
  • Assist in preparing for internal and external audits.
  • Manage inventory of reagents and chemicals.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Biological Sciences, Life Sciences, Biomedical Science, or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
  • Relevant experience in a histology laboratory is advantageous.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and demonstrate initiative.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in multi-tasking and effective time management.
  • Familiarity with applicable computer systems and software is essential.
