Job Description

The National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for the role of Research Assistant with the Heat Resilience & Performance Centre (HRPC), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. As extreme heat becomes one of the defining health and performance challenges of our time, HRPC aims to generate evidence-based solutions that protect people who live, train, work, and operate in hot environments. Our work sits at the intersection of climate change, human physiology, occupational health, public health, and performance science.


We are looking for curious, proactive, and mission-driven individuals who want to contribute to heat health research with tangible impact. This role is ideal for candidates interested in how the human body responds to heat, enjoys hands-on research, is comfortable working across laboratory and real-world environments, and who are motivated to help develop practical interventions, policies, and technologies for people living, working, training, and operating in hot and humid environments.

The role involves a blend of research planning, laboratory and field-based data collection, data management, analysis, reporting, and scientific publication. You will work alongside exercise and thermal physiologists, clinicians, data scientists, biomedical engineers, behavioural researchers, and operational partners to address complex heat-related challenges from multiple perspectives. There may also be opportunities for postgraduate pursuits with HRPC.

This position is suitable for both fresh graduates with a strong interest in research and candidates with prior research experience. Applicants without direct experience in heat health research are welcome, provided they are motivated to learn, comfortable working across laboratory and real-world environments, and excited to apply science to pressing climate-related health challenges.



The main areas of responsibilities of the role will include but limited to the following:

  • Work with Principal Investigators and research teams to develop and refine research ideas
  • Conduct literature searches, summarise key findings, and identify research gaps
  • Support the design and implementation of qualitative and quantitative studies
  • Conduct laboratory-based studies, including climatic chamber experiments and wet lab analysis
  • Support field-based data collection in operational and real-world settings
  • Collect, manage, and maintain research data and large databases
  • Analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative data
  • Prepare research reports, summaries, presentations, and other project documentation
  • Present findings to research teams, collaborators, and relevant stakeholders
  • Contribute to conference presentations and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals
  • Collaborate across teams and contribute to multiple research projects concurrently
  • Support administrative, regulatory, and ethics-related processes where require

Qualifications

Applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree in one or more of the following areas:

  • Exercise and Sports Science
  • Physiology
  • Biomedical Science
  • Public Health
  • A related discipline

Candidates with no experience with a strong interest in heat health, human performance, climate resilience, or translational research are welcome to apply. Candidates with a strong background in data science, analytics, or biomedical engineering who are interested in applying their skills to heat health research are also encouraged to apply.

Applicants should demonstrate, or be willing to develop, the following:

  • Strong interest in heat health, human performance, occupational health, or climate-related health research
  • Familiarity with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • Experience with data collection involving human participants
  • Ability to manage, clean, organise, and analyse research data
  • Familiarity with statistical, data analysis, or visualisation tools such as SPSS, R, Python, Power BI, or equivalent platforms
  • Proficiency in common computer applications, including Microsoft Office and online collaboration tools
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prepare research reports, presentations, and scientific manuscripts
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Prior experience in research, physiological testing, human performance assessment, climatic chamber studies, field-based studies, basic wet lab analysis or statistical analysis would be advantageous but is not essential.

The successful candidate should be:

  • Resourceful, self-driven, and proactive
  • Adaptable and able to manage multiple tasks with clear follow-through
  • Careful and consistent in maintaining research quality and data integrity
  • Comfortable working in both laboratory and field environments
  • Willing to travel off-site for data collection when required
  • Willing to work outside routine office hours when required for study needs
  • Open to further training in relevant research and data collection procedures
  • Committed to contributing to a positive and collaborative research culture
  • Interested in continuous learning and professional development

Appointment and Location

The role is based in Singapore.

Remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
